About the Project
No narrative history of the Stone-Campbell Movement currently in publication is suitable for the 21st century. Our histories tend to focus on the North American context and to treat the global expressions of the Movement as missions only. They narrate the story according to a series of events that led to two major divisions in North America and lose sight of the Movement's historic emphasis on Christian unity and world evangelization. They pay significant attention to institutional developments but not to the "lived religion" of the average person of faith. And they often marginalize or do not include the significant contrbutions of racial/ethnic minority and women leaders of the Movement.
Based largely on new historical research, this global and inclusive history of the Stone-Campbell Movement seeks to remedy these shortcomings in the way that we tell our history. We hope that all the diverse expressions of the Movement will hear their stories represented faithfully in this new history, and that a generation of laypeople and church leaders will learn the relevance of promoting New Testament Christianity and working toward the unity of all Christians, which is the very heart of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Funding for this project has been provided principally by Disciples of Christ Historical Society and Chalice Press.
